WORKFLOW
There is no substitution to getting out in the field and setting up your easel before the elegant randomness of the Universe. If your work is tight and you want to loosen up, there is only one solution and that is PAINT ON LOCATION in the out of doors. It is the only way to see the TRUTH for the lense is incapable of capturing both the light family and the shadow family with any accuracy to color (or value for that matter).
That said, there is still room for learning a great deal in the studio, not to mention blowing paintings up to sizes that are prohibitive outside. The trick is to recreate, as best you can, the feel of painting outside (for landscape work anyway). I have dialed in a studio workstation that mimicks the outdoor experience as good as it can.
Below are some tricks and general information that I’ve learned over the years from either trial and error, other artists, or luck (The stuff they don’t teach you in art school, at least some schools).
