In this workshop, I will teach the principals of the FORM and LIGHT approach to direct oil painting (alla prima, or direct painting is painting in one session in oils wet into wet, the ideal approach to plein air painting). I will be doing a short yet thorough demonstrate twice per day where we will explore the processes and language of painting, and how the language pertains to painting a convincing illusion of space, form, and light in the landscape. I teach a 4 pronged approach that is both easy to remember and an effective way of breaking down difficult subject matter into manageable visual information. By learning to see relationships of VALUE, SHAPE, EDGE, and TEXTURE in your subject, you’ll better equip yourself to visualize the abstract foundation or design of a painting, and time will be allotted to explore the importance of learning to see design in the landscape. I am careful to give each student “effective” time allowing for students of various abilities to benefit greatly.

People signing up for the workshop will receive a complimentary copy of the book I wrote, “A Foundational Guide to Creating Better Oil Paintings.” The book is based in the 4 pronged method I teach on the Form and Light approach to painting. Through reading and doing the exercises illustrated in the book before the workshop, you’ll be best prepared for the information inundation you’ll get from the class.  Please email me your mailing address to receive your copy.

Supply List:

Assortment of bristle & sable flat brushes and a medium sized pallet knife

Paper towels (Viva brand works great)

A Portable Easel (I have designed one that is available called the “Prolific Easel”. To check it out click HERE)
