Mr. Ted Turner’s ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’

"Spring Rain On The Vermejo" 24X30 Oil In May the Colorado Conservation Trust got in contact with me. They had seen some of my work at the Abend Gallery in Denver and ended up commissioning me to paint what was to become the award for Ted Turner’s “Lifetime Achievement Award for Ted and JoshConservation.” Mike Ross and Patrick Holmes from the CCT got in contact with some of the heads down at Ted’s Vermejo Park Ranch outside of Raton, NM. The Vermejo’s a reasonable spread of nearly 600,000 acres that extends from high desert terrain dotted with pinyons, sage and some foothill red-rock all the way to a half dozen thirteen thousand foot alpine mountains of the Southern Sangre De Cristo Mountains. We witnessed the entire gamut of North American high country critters. We saw two bears, countless elk and deer, pronghorn, of course there were his five thousand head of bison wandering the grounds, duck, geese, hawks, eagles, etc. It was a partly cloudy day with some rain here and there which made for some great photography opportunities. Between Laura and I, we probably took close to a thousand pictures out there. I compiled a few of them (not an easy choice) Buffalo 1Front BuffaloBaby BuffaloDistant MountainMeanderingCastle Rockto create the painting that ended up going to the banquet for Ted. I’ve included in this blog entry some of my favorites from the day of pictures as well as the few that I used to compile the painting. Enjoy. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments area.
