There is an expectation that this genre is painted from life, from a set-up of the artist’s design, choosing all matter of subjects of interest and controlling the lighting. I feel it can happen all the time when you’re painting on location. Specifically, going to a known location of man-made appeal, for the light at a certain time of day.  I think in such occasions, one sort of sets themselves up in the still life.
